11.14.2012 The Role of Chlorhexidine in Vascular Access: Protecting Your Patient

Chlorhexidine is a safe, efficacious antimicrobial, and its use in vascular access is well documented. Chlorhexidine has been used for decades by the healthcare industry as a surgical skin preparation solution, hand sanitizer, wound care solution, and oral care solution as well as in other applications. In addition it has been incorporated into medical devices such as antimicrobial vascular access catheters, dental products, vascular access site and wound dressings and more. Chlorhexidine products have been shown to be effective tools to prevent Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections (CLABSIs) for over 20 years. Chlorhexidine will continue to play an important role in healthcare as we strive for zero infections. Companies that focus on vascular access have partnered to create an awareness and open dialog on the importance of chlorhexidine.
